Volunteer

Did you know that the Inner West Tool Library operates with no paid staff and is a 100% volunteer-driven effort?

We are currently looking for more wonderful people to help out. Sign up through BetterImpact and we’ll be in touch, or flick us an email if you have any questions: volunteer_coordinator [at] innerwesttoollibrary.com.au

Volunteer opportunities:

  • Join the front line crew and become a Tool Librarian - be the face of the IWTL, talking to members and responsible for loaning out items and generally keeping the IWTL amazing.

  • Do you have significant home reno experience? Our Tool Ninjas and help advise members on what tools they need and how to best use them.

  • Like taking amazing photos? Experienced in online engagement? Appreciate a good (bad) pun? Social Media Gurus apply here too!

  • Want to spread the tool library love? Tool Library Talkers help at markets and events, talking to the community about what we do and why we do it.

  • Some people just love a bit of nerdy data management and we have a couple of small projects on the list to keep our impact reports up to date.

Have any extra tools or equipment not being used?

If you have spare or unused tools kicking around your garage, garden shed or closet – the Inner West Tool Library is an opportunity to give them a second life within our community. As well as tools, we also accept camping and gardening equipment, party supplies, and other ‘useful’ things - think things you may only use once or twice a year.

Please do not leave donations outside the tool library.

  • We ask that donated tools and items be in working order and non-gasoline powered. If they are battery powered, we ask they have at least one working battery and the charger.

Please note that we cannot take every tool and we reserve the right to turn away, redistribute, or sell tools we cannot use, easily service/repair, or have space to store.

Contact us first before bringing in a large donation so we can make sure it’s a good fit for the space and our collection!

    Not needed at this time:

    • Basic hand tools (standard screwdrivers, wrenches, sockets, hand saws, hammers)

    • Broken equipment

    • Power tools that are not working or that lack batteries and/or chargers

    • Axes, picks, shovels, pruning loppers

    • Leaf blower

    • Drills

    • Circular Saws, Drop saw, Mitre saw- Sanders, angle grinder

    • Tents

    • Tool belts, tool pouches, or tool bags (small tool boxes welcome!)

    • Liquids, Adhesives, caulks, paints, or other messy building supplies

    • Anything that operates with petrol

    • Large items we cannot store or handle easily

We also appreciate new consumable goods, like sanding belts and sharp blades if they fit the tools we have. For instance: you bought some collated nails to use with the nail gun and have some left over? We’ll give them to the next person that borrows the tool so they can use them!

    Circular economy at its best!
